The message is in plain english. It says all players should change their passwords immediately. If ANet wants to communicate with us, they'd better say what they mean and not expect anyone to rely on self-appointed interpreters on fan forums to explain that their statement means something different. Who exactly told you that "all players" doesn't really mean "all players"?

It is entirely possible and to think otherwise is simply naive. Everyone seems to think that you need particular information for something to be hacked, or that you need to give away your password or visit obscure websites to have your account broken into which is entirely inaccurate. A decent hacker requires nothing more than your IP address to hack into a computer/server or the like. Websites are hacked daily through ports, server IP addresses etc.

The biggest mistake that most people make is that they assume hackers are incompetent or assume that they are just stupid, which sorry to say, if you do, you are the one who is just plain stupid.

this is so funny what people are having conniptions and wracking themselves stupid over, but in all 3,201,928 other threads just like this one where i told everyone what's up in, it was just ignored like all other sensible and logical responses while the convulsions and panicking continued.

so for now, i sit back and laugh. at the retardation of the community, and the lengths anet is going to in order to curb said retardation.

It's funny how that works, and I agree with you entirely. See what they haven't clued into is that if there was a problem and they were hacked, we would have heard something about it by now. Even if it is only them claiming that their systems have been compromised due to WoW being unsecure... honestly at this point, I would even expect this since they still seem to be trying to pass the blame.

My guess would be that it's legitimate. If someone was able to hack into ANet itself to put that warning on the login screen, I would assume that it wouldn't be there very long (it's still there) and/or ANet would shut the GW servers down for "maintenance".
The need to change your password would depend upon how unique your GW password is. If, as it says in the warning, you used the same password in other games - particularly other games that are no longer active and/or some of the free MMOs - you should get yourself a "strong" and unique password for GW which you don't use for anything else.

Still, though, you need to be aware of the usual threats from key-loggers, trojans, and hack sites.

QFT, i am in exactly the same situation... for a moment i thought was safe (very strong password that i only use for the game itself), but thinking of XTH and reading that start-to-panic-message makes me think it is time to worry

Is the XTH website hacked?

It would be epic fail if XTH resulted in hacked accounts.

" Please change your password today!

We are seeing hackers try to log into Guild Wars accounts using passwords stolen from other games and web sites. For your security, you should never use the same or a similar password for Guild Wars that you use for any other purpose. We strongly recommend that all Guild Wars players change their passwords immediately. "

I'm freaking out here!!! Answers please:

I am a Victom of this. I Lost alot of hard work.

on Dec 13th at 1:17am, I was playing CoD4 on my main PC, when I noticed that I got an email, and I always check my MSN right away when I get a message,

Someone at 116.2.222.91 has reset your Guild Wars Game Account password for account . If you did not make this change, please contact support immediately at [email protected].

So I stopped playing and sent an email right away to support saying

"I have not requested a password change to my Guildwars account."

I got a message the next day saying that they had to send this to s diffrent Dept, then another Later on that day to further verify who I was. Wasn't till today at 4:30pm that I got a message saying,

Thank you for your patience to this point. It appears as though your NCsoft master account may have been compromised. We can help you resolve this issue and bring the account back under your control. That would allow you to manage your Guild Wars game account directly from this point forward.

Your NCsoft master account password has been reset and the automatically generated password has been sent to your e-mail address. If you do not receive this e-mail, please check any spam/junk mail folders as some e-mail services might recognize the auto-generated password e-mail as spam.

The following articles from the Knowledge Base should then assist you with resetting your NCsoft master account and Guild Wars game account passwords once you are able to log into your account again.

It'z great that I now have my account back, BUT MY 3 YEARS OF WORK HAVE BEEN TAKEN FROM ME.

I'm hoping that they can roll back or something, I did respond back to the orrigonal emailsaying someone was changing my password. Responded right away, withing 1 minute actually. not my fault it took them almost 4 days to get this taken care of.

No one.

And who exactly told you to get pissed off at me for voicing what I thought was the right idea?

1. I assumed old passwords = stale passwords, PW's that are likely to be close to fully known by hackers (by guessing each letter slowly over time) changing them would basically help throw the hacker off. This happens in any game. Or any account online. I assume ANET wanted to make it clear.. change the suckers!

2. If ANET was serious about this immediate password change, they fail because that means a security breach happened somewhere and somewhere, someone has a list (or partial list) of emails to passwords that are 100% legit.

I normally brush off #2, because if it is.. **** this game company. But I don't want to yet. I love them and GW too much and am in denial, so it's #1.

If it is... yes.. huge epic fail. And like many, I'm probably screwed too. Call me crazy but I'd actually stop and re evaluate my decision to invest money to buy and time to play GW2 if XTH was the reason for the hacking. I really would.

I can understand them telling All Players to change their passwords. As it is a good idea to chage your passwords every so often for basic security. Changing your password every so often makes it harder to get into if your security is ever breached. Doesn't matter how strong your password is.

On the other Hand I am seeing alot of posts on difrent sites with people getting their accounts hacked this month. Maybe it'z time for a Backup restore to last month some time and have a manditory password change to lock things down again.

No company is completly safe from hackers, just ask the Military. If someone wants in bad enough, they will get in.

Let'z just hope that the company we trusted all these years can be trusted to do the right thing.

Exact same thing happened to my officer???s account. In his case it highly looks like a security breach at NCsoft, he only has access to the internet at my house on his laptop and he only does three things on it,check emails, play GW and WoW. We found a password reset email from NCsoft and had a "wtf" moment (we have antispyware precautions ect).

This is bad

To be fair, when I signed up for the XTH, I specifically remember a statement about not using the same password as for logging into GW itself. Anyone who did simply didn't follow directions. Password changes are necessary to protect your investment of time in this game. If it's not worth taking a few minutes and writing down a new password until you memorize it, then it's not really that important to you.

This is the resonce I got back

The Guild Wars Support Team does not have the capability to replace characters or items, whether they are lost through the actions of unfriendly players, deletion accidents, or through other means.

Please let us know if you need assistance with anything else.

Regards,
GM ApplePython
The Guild Wars Support Team

So what was the reson to report the hacker/password issue right away, like th 1st email stated, if they don't do anything for 3-4 days....At the very least, password related issues should be dealt with right away, not 4 days later, at least then I may have been able to salvage some stuff.

With the amount of people I'm seeing around the net this month alone tells me their security has possibly been compremised, but they don't care, because you already paid for the game(s) upfront, so they have their money.....

Hmmmmm Guild Wars 2....should I trust my security further, or just delete my whole account now....

holy ****? why is everyone jumping into conclusions and going through slippery slopes?
It may be very possible that big guilds in GW would have a forum in which members register in it, and members carelessly used their gw email accounts and passwords to register, and thus, get hacked.
dont suddenly come to conclusions such as "XTH IS HACKED OMFG!"
then having overreactions such as: "OMG I HAVE TO DELETE MY ACCOUNT!" "I CANT TRUST GW ANYMORE! T.T!!!" "I WONDER IF WE CAN TRUST GW2!!"

for now, it doesnt seem to do any harm in changing your password.

It's also entirely possible that people were legitimately hacked and it may or may not have everything to do with ANet security in general. You complain about people jumping to conclusions, yet you yourself portray a biased opinion that is not open to possibility and probability. There is absolutely nothing wrong with people being aware, or people being doubtful. It's simply to be expected, especially after ANet's track record.

Well, my passwords already were pretty safe, and not used anywhere else, including the XTH. But I went ahead and changed them all anyway, no harm in that.
Apparently, Anet has had some major security issues, and I'd like to know why exactly the red message is there. WTH happened Anet???

Strangely enough though, I tried to do the same for my GF's account, logged into PlayNC (also with a unique password), and was surprised to see her game account suddenly WAS NOT linked to PlayNC anymore!?!? WTH!?!? I KNOW we linked it, because I had all the info written down. So I changed her password the old fashion way in the game itself (which is ever so easy). Still, how come her account suddenly got un-linked from PlayNC??? And how to link it back again???

I'd love some answers Anet.
